One of the most popular Japanese flowering cherry trees, Prunus ‘Kanzan’ is renowned for its abundant display of large, blousy, double pink flowers with delicately frilled edges. Appearing from April into early May, the ornate pink blossom carries a subtle hint of purple and is followed by the emergence of bronze-coloured new leaves. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to mid-green before developing striking burnt-orange tones in autumn.
Also known as Prunus ‘Sekiyama’, it has a slowly spreading habit and is equally impressive when planted as an avenue tree or grown as a standalone specimen. A medium-sized Japanese flowering cherry, it is expected to reach approximately 6 metres in height and 4 metres in spread over 20 years.
Prunus ‘Kanzan’ is adaptable to most positions, tolerating polluted environments and soils ranging from acidic to alkaline. Avoid planting it in a site prone to very wet conditions or shallow, chalky soils and it will reward you with striking pink spring cherry blossom every year.
