Prunus 'Taihaku' Tree

Prunus 'Taihaku' Tree

Prunus 'Taihaku' is a splendid ancient variety of flowering Cherry tree from Japan. After becoming extinct in Japan, a single variety was found in a garden in Sussex which has allowed this marvellous ornamental tree to live on.

Prunus 'Taihaku' has large, icy white, single flowers that emerge from pink buds in April. Measuring around 5cm across, the flowers are larger than most ornamental cherry flowers and give it its common name, Great White Cherry. Bronze leaves appear with the blossom in spring, giving an attractive foil before turning mid-green in summer and then vibrant yellow and orange in the autumn.

A medium sized cherry blossom tree, Prunus 'Taihaku' will grow to 6 x 5 metres in 20 years and has a rounded habit. It is suited to most well-draining soils and is pollution tolerant so will do well in urban settings. Beautiful when used in avenue planting and or as a single specimen, the Great White Cherry tree is probably one of the best white flowering Cherry trees available.
